Strelitzia reginae, better known as the Bird of Paradise plant, is an iconic and exotic plant that immediately gives your garden or indoor space a tropical touch. This plant, native to South Africa, is best known for its unique, colorful flowers that resemble the beautiful feathers of a bird of paradise. If you're looking for a way to add a little exotic flair to your environment, Strelitzia reginae seeds are an excellent choice.
Good to know: seeds of the Strelitzia have a lengthy and often unpredictable germination period, typically ranging from four weeks up to three or even six months.
Grow your own bird of paradise plant
Growing Strelitzia reginae from seed is a rewarding process, but requires patience and careful planning. It may take several years before the plant blooms (on average 3 to 5 years), but the result is worth the wait. The flowers are stunning: bright orange and blue, in a shape reminiscent of a bird's head.
Although Strelitzia reginae can flower beautifully, it is important to know that this plant is not equally suitable in every climate. The plant can be kept as a houseplant in colder climates, but it is difficult to get the plant to bloom.
Subtropical and tropical climates are ideal for Strelitzia reginae. This means that the plant will do well in areas such as South Africa (its origin), parts of Southern Europe, and parts of South America. The plant also blooms beautifully in parts of Australia and California.
Mediterranean climates (such as southern Spain, Italy and Greece) also offer suitable conditions, provided the winters are not too harsh.
Indoor spaces or greenhouses: In cooler climates, such as the Netherlands and Belgium, you can also grow the Strelitzia indoors. Make sure the plant gets enough light, for example next to a south-facing window.
Cold climates: Strelitzia reginae does not tolerate frost. Temperatures below 5°C can damage or even kill the plant. This makes this plant unsuitable for outdoor use in countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium during the winter months. In these areas you can place the plant outside in the summer, but it must be brought inside in the winter.
Climates with high humidity or constant rain: Although the plant is native to a subtropical region, it does not do well in very humid conditions, especially if the soil remains moist for too long. This can lead to root rot.
Tips for Growing Strelitzia Reginae from Seed:
Soak the seeds before planting to soften the hard outer layer. This speeds up the germination process.
Heat and plenty of light are essential for germination. Place the seeds in a warm place, preferably between 20-25°C.
