The Jimmy Nardello isn’t just a pepper — it’s a living piece of culinary history.
Originally from the small village of Ruoti in southern Italy’s Basilicata region, this sweet, slender pepper traveled across the ocean in 1887 when the Nardello family emigrated to the United States. Tucked safely in their belongings was a small pouch of seeds — a treasured reminder of home.
Generations later, their son Jimmy Nardello continued to grow and share those same seeds, ensuring that this heirloom variety would never be lost. Today, the pepper proudly bears his name and is celebrated around the world for its exceptionally sweet, fruity flavor and thin, delicate skin that caramelizes beautifully when cooked.
The peppers are long and slender, typically 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) in length, ripening from green to a brilliant glossy red. When eaten fresh, they’re crisp and sweet; when roasted, they turn silky and rich, developing a flavor reminiscent of sunshine and slow summer afternoons. It’s often called “the candy pepper of the garden” — a perfect blend of heritage, flavor, and heart.
🌱 Sowing and Preparation (8–10 weeks before the last frost)
Start Jimmy Nardello seeds indoors about 8–10 weeks before your area’s final frost date. Peppers need warmth and time to thrive.
Fill small pots with moist, well-draining potting mix.
Sow 1–2 seeds per pot and cover lightly (about 0.5 cm / ¼ inch deep).
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy.
Maintain a warm environment — 24–28 °C (75–82 °F) is ideal for germination.
🌱 Germination: Seeds usually sprout within 10–14 days.
☀️ Caring for Seedlings
Provide plenty of light — at least 12–16 hours daily using a sunny window or grow lights.
Once seedlings have 3–4 true leaves, transplant them into larger pots (about 9 cm / 3 inches) to encourage strong roots and sturdy growth.
🌤️ Hardening Off (2 weeks before transplanting)
Before moving them outdoors, gradually acclimate your plants to sunlight and wind.
Set them outside for a few hours each day, extending the time over 1–2 weeks.
Only transplant once night temperatures stay consistently above 12 °C (54 °F) — peppers dislike the cold.
🌾 Transplanting (after the last frost)
Location:
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot that receives 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.
Soil should be fertile, well-draining, and rich in organic matter.
Peppers also perform very well in large pots or raised beds.
Spacing:
Plant 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) apart to allow for airflow and growth.
💧 Care During Growth
Watering:
Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during warm weather. Avoid waterlogging.
Feeding:
Feed with an organic vegetable or tomato fertilizer every 2–3 weeks once the plants start flowering.
Support:
Mature plants reach 60–80 cm (2–2.5 ft) and may need gentle support as they begin to carry heavy clusters of peppers.
🍎 Harvesting
The Jimmy Nardello is ready to harvest when the fruits turn a deep, glossy red.
They can also be picked green, but their signature sweetness develops fully when ripe.
Fresh from the plant, they’re crisp and delicate — perfect for salads or snacks.
When roasted, grilled, or sautéed, they develop a beautiful caramelized flavor, ideal for pasta, pizza, bruschetta, or simply enjoyed warm with olive oil and sea salt.
These peppers also dry and freeze exceptionally well, letting you savor their sweetness long after the garden season ends.
