Details

The Meconopsis Horridula, with its impressive deep blue flowers, is a rarity in the garden world.

The Meconopsis Horridula grows in the highlands of the Himalayas, where the air is cool and clear. In this environment the plant finds ideal conditions: shady places in the forests, moist soils and a cool climate. In the early 20th century, the first specimens of Meconopsis Horridula were brought to Europe by adventurous plant collectors and botanists looking for new discoveries. The introduction of the Meconopsis Horridula into European gardens marked the beginning of a new phase in the history of this plant. Garden enthusiasts and botanists were fascinated by the beauty and challenge of growing this exotic plant, leading to increased interest and research into the best ways to help the Big Blue Poppy thrive outside its native environment.

Because the natural habitat must be imitated, growing it takes a little more effort and time than the average plant. The plant can be grown successfully in a cool, shady, sheltered spot with a well-drained, but moist, humus-rich soil that is slightly acidic.

Preparing the seeds:
The seeds require moist stratification to germinate successfully. This means that they have to undergo a cold period in a humid environment. It is important that the environment is moist, but not waterlogged. There are basically 2 options for providing the seeds with this:

1. Sow in spring between March and May:
Place the seeds directly in a growing container with a transparent lid containing sowing soil (as described below) or in slightly damp kitchen roll in a plastic bag and place this in the refrigerator for about 3 weeks. After this, the seeds can be sown in growing containers in a cold greenhouse or windowsill with indirect sunlight. A place where it is about 15-20 C is most suitable.

2. Sow in winter around the end of February:
The advantage of sowing around this period is that they can develop for a full season.
It can be sown directly into growing trays in a cold greenhouse with indirect sunlight.
In this way, the seeds are naturally provided with moist stratification in a place where it gradually warms up to about 15-20 C.

Preparation of the sowing soil:
Mix 2/3rd part potting soil with 1/3rd part perlite or sand.
This ensures good drainage and the granular structure of perlite and sand also ensures that the roots are not damaged when transplanting to the garden.

Sowing:
It is best to cover the sowing soil with a top layer of moist horticultural grit or vermicumilite and sow the seeds directly onto it. The seeds need light to germinate properly. Sow in deep pots in a growing container with a transparent lid. Sow about 5 seeds per pot. The deep pots benefit the deep-shooting roots and the cultivation container with lid ensures that the humidity is high without the soil having to be soaked with water. Water the soil carefully with a plant sprayer to ensure that it is and remains evenly moist and does not dry out. The Meconopsis Horridula is unpredictable in germination and it can take from 2 weeks to 3 months before the first seeds will germinate. Place the seed or propagator in a bright spot with indirect sunlight. A cold greenhouse is ideal for this. Here you can also sow directly in pots around February so that stratification takes place automatically. As soon as the plant has four pairs of leaves and the last night frost has occurred, the plants can be transplanted in a permanent spot.

Transplant:
Plant the young Meconopsis Horridula in their final cool, shady, sheltered spot with a well-drained, but moist, humus-rich soil that is slightly acidic. Ensure there is sufficient space between the plants so that they can grow well. Provide regular watering, especially during dry periods, and keep weeds and snails at bay. The plant may take some time to settle and blossom, so patience is an important factor in this process. After several months of care and patience you will be rewarded with the spectacular, deep blue flowers of the Meconopsis Horridula. The beautiful flowers will enrich your garden and provide a truly striking accent.

The seeds are not suitable for consumption.
